Here are 3 tips from policy leaders from across Vancouver, to help empowered elders create positive, lasting change in their communities:

1. Make the connection.
Identify and build quality relationships with community partners and leaders in a position to implement systemic and/or policy development change. Team up with local champions, seniors’ advocates and peers who have trained with capacity-building programs like Finding Home™.

2. Be informed.
Gather as much information about grassroots organizing and social change in order to be prepared for the role you’re taking on. You should also consider the wider socio-cultural contexts of the issues you’d like to change, and how these may affect your approach.

3. Track your outcomes.
Use qualitative measures, like surveys, interviews and focus groups, to collect data that not only helps your program evolve, but also enables you to make recommendations to relevant policy development decision makers.
